Rapamycin, also known as sirolimus is a macrolide antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces hygroscopicus with anti-fungal, anti-inflammantory, anti-tumor, and immunosuppressive properties. It inhibits a protein, mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), a key regulatory kinase controlling cytokine-mediated cellular proliferation. Additionally, it induces apoptosis and inhibits angiogenesis and proliferation in tumor cell lines.
